The autoimmune protocol can be a huge life change, and there are so many resources available to dig through. When I started, I decided to focus on a small number of AIP resources first. Below are the AIP resources that I have personally used and love, and I’ll continually add to this list as I discover more. I also should note that all of these resources (except for maybe the Hashimoto’s Protocol) have beneficial information for anyone interested in living a healthy life, not just for those with autoimmune disease
The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook by Mickey Trescott, NTP, and Angie Alt, NTC, CHC, was one of the first books I read on the autoimmune protocol. I highly recommend this as an intro book. They present digestible (pun intended), yet comprehensive information about the ins and outs of the protocol including nutrition, recipes, lifestyle factors, and advice on how to approach finding the proper medical team for your needs. I can’t express how important this book was to the beginning of my healing journey.
Hashimoto's Protocol: A 90-Day Plan for Reversing Thyroid Symptoms and Getting Your Life Back by Izabella Wentz, PharmD is a great guide because it is Hashimoto’s specific. I started this book after I started the autoimmune protocol. This resources contains many lifestyle interventions to aid in targeting the root cause of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. I especially liked this book because Dr. Izabella Wentz has experience as a pharmacist and works with Hashimoto’s patients.
Paleo Principles: The Science Behind the Paleo Template, Step-by-Step Guides, Meal Plans, and 200+ Healthy & Delicious Recipes for Real Life by Sarah Ballantyne, PhD, is the mother of all paleo books (fitting as Sarah also goes by The Paleo Mom). When I got this 672 page book I felt like I was back in college with a new textbook. But don’t be deterred by the size, the science based information in this book is incredibly approachable. I’ve found that fully understanding the science behind the autoimmune protocol and paleo diet has made everything so much more manageable. I know exactly why I’m eating or avoiding certain foods, and what those foods will do to my body. The power to make informed decisions for myself about my diet and lifestyle changes has directly contributed to my success on the protocol so far.
The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook: An Allergen-Free Approach to Managing Chronic Illness (US Version) by Mickey Trescott, NTP, goes well with The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook. This book helped me learn how to cook AIP and paleo, which was a huge step. Unable to cook with tomatoes, peppers, eggs, and dairy was a big challenge for me. I basically had to relearn how to cook. This book made me feel more confident in what I was making by explaining basics, and also helped me to add more variety to my meals with the delicious recipes and meal plans. (P.S.
